The History of Telescopes

by Vic Hurlstorm on June 14, 2009

Before purchasing a telescope it is very important to know what you want and what. You will quickly learn that there are many different types of scopes and mounts. The types of telescopes that sell in department stores for up to $300 and more are mostly junk. When getting started in any new hobby the best advice is always to start with the basics. The wide field of view and erect image of binoculars allow easy navigation around the sky.

The cost to the United States and the European Union was originally projected at about 500 million dollars. However, the problems of the Hubble mission have long been corrected. One reason that the cost of the Hubble is so high is that it is the only telescope ever designed to be serviced in orbit 330 miles above the Earth by astronauts. The mission will make the telescope operational through the year 2013.

It is not the shear number of telescopes available, but that not that many places specialize in telescopes to use for viewing objects in space. You may even be lucky enough to have a specialist telescope seller near to where you live. Small telescopes that are used as toys if you are interested in buying a telescope are also capable of viewing some objects around 50 meters away. For many people into astronomy, there first telescope indeed was a toy store purchased telescope, which retailed for $100 or less. So if you simply want to see whether you like astronomy or not, then these cheap telescopes can be of value.

For many people, star gazing doesn’t start just as a favorite pursuit. Whether you’re catching a glimpse of the star-filled clear skies or peeping into the cosmos through your telescope, you can’t deny the felicity it imparts. Every one of us would have at least once in our lives gazed at the stars with an exaltation so pure and divine. Star gazing was a major branch of observation and laid the foundation for Astronomy.

The history of astronomy develops from Stonehenge to the famous astrophysicist Galileo to the telescope to the human planetary missions. Stonehenge was built by the Neolithic people to establish the replica of Sun’s movement. There were some practical realities in this belief. Predicting seasons correctly helped the farmers to plan their cultivation. The history of astronomy greatly owed to another thinker, Ptolemy for his geocentric theory even though it was later discovered wrong.
