How To Write Great KSA Statements

by Chuck Bronson on February 8, 2010

Applying for a Government job is different than applying for a civilian job. When a job opening is posted, they may ASK applicants to submit a narrative statement in addition to a resume.

KSA stands for knowledge, skills, and abilities, and should be written in a personal, yet professional style to showcase your particular knowledge, skills and abilities to the hiring manager. There are four basic steps to writing a great KSA:

1. Review the Job opening. Pay attention to every detail. Also be certain that you understand the announcement before preparing your essays otherwise you will not be able to give the right information to the hiring manager.

2. Brainstorming. Writing an effective KSA response requires that you find experience that you have in relation to the job you want. You can use work experience, certifications or skills that you got through non-work related activities. Don’t limit yourself to your experience: as long as it’s relevant, the experience doesn’t have to be work related.

3. Now that you know your skills, you need to remember how they were used on the job. Ask yourself about the use of job skills, supervision (if any), your team player abilities, difficulty of your job, rules you follow, etc … When answering KSA points, you simply need to focus on how of they relate to what you need. This will become your KSA answers.

4. When you finally write your KSA’s, you need to be very straightforward. You need to demonstrate how the skills, abilities, and knowledge you have are related to the vacancy announcement. Don’t assume that the recruiter will be able to connect the dots; instead, make the connection for them.

Your KSA’s will be graded on content so as long as you are clear, it doesn’t matter what your style is. KSA answers are generally limited to less than a page. Avoid complex words and jargon as if the recruiters can’t understand what you’re saying, they probably won’t hire you, even if you’re good.

KSA writing can seem complicated, especially since you need to create a new essay for every announcement you are applying to. As long as you take your time and follow these points, you should have no problem writing great KSA answers.
