Some Points For Successful Portrait Photographs

People have been a popular topic for many prize-winning photos from time to time. It isn’t just about taking a photo of a face though. It is more about making a person or many persons become “alive” within a photo, by showing them in their grandeur.

A good portrait photo goes against the convention and is able to capture mental states and perspectives of a person like never seen before. However, regular family or single person portraits are also done and they are appropriate for family albums.

A perfect close up with a sharp focus on the subject’s face is what gives portrait images that discernible mark of elegance. This can be done by adjusting camera settings to blur the subject’s background so that his or her face receives optimum focus. A camera with a broader aperture can achieve this ideal balance between the background and the person’s face. Whereas, when both the individual and the background are equally significant, like an image taken with the subject in a scenic landscape, then a normal aperture is advisable.

Photography is all about absorption of light into the camera; thus inadequate light has always been a photographer’s cause of worry. However, some critical photography tips if seriously followed can produce that ideal portrait photograph. One of the tricks is to make the subject sit near the window such that the light coming from it falls on only part of the face. The remaining part of the face can be lighted up by using something reflective like a white piece of glossy paper or board. However, portrait photography is best shot in studios as lights can be controlled there.

The final but perhaps the most important aspect of portrait photography is to make the subject feels comfortable. If the subject doesn’t feel comfortable while being photographed and doesn’t give a natural expression, then even the highest quality camera and lighting methods can not ensure a good portrait.
